Journey Into Iceland’s Volcanic Underground World
Step into the shadows of Iceland’s volcanic past and venture deep into Raufarhólshellir, one of the country’s largest and most spectacular lava tunnels. This authentic caving adventure takes you through the complete tunnel system, discovering hidden lava falls and experiencing the profound darkness of Iceland’s underground volcanic landscape.
Exploring the Full Length of Raufarhólshellir
Raufarhólshellir — meaning “The Cave of Rough Rock” — stretches over 1,360 meters through ancient lava formations created approximately 5,200 years ago. Your certified caving guide leads you from the entrance chambers to the deepest navigable sections, navigating uneven surfaces, narrow passages, and elevation changes. Along the way, you will discover hidden underground waterfalls, examine diverse lava rock textures that reveal eruption temperatures and cooling rates, and venture into sections of complete darkness illuminated only by headlamps.
A True Underground Adventure
This is not a casual walk through a lit-up tunnel. The 3-4 hour expedition is a genuine caving experience through Iceland’s volcanic underground, with a constant temperature of 3-4°C and terrain that demands good fitness and balance. Small groups of maximum 8 participants ensure personalized guidance and an intimate atmosphere in the profound silence of the deep earth.
Professional Equipment Provided
All essential caving gear is included: professional-grade helmets, high-power LED headlamps, protective gloves, and crampons for icy sections when needed. Your expert guide provides geological education throughout, explaining the volcanic eruption that created this massive lava tube and its connection to Iceland’s ongoing geological activity.
